NEW TUTOR TO LPW + NEW COURSE

You will create your images using a wide variety of visual languages - cutting and tearing paper to create stencils for use photographically or to print through, using objects to create photograms and also abstract mark-making with patterns and fine hand drawing.

This course will give you a fantastic jump start to the possibilities of this very popular technique. You will get a grounding in selecting the right kind of images, setting up your workspace, using the equipment and materials.

You will receive expert tuition about how to pull your screen, making layered editions and have lots of hands on help and tips from Karoline. This all means that this three day course will develop your skills and make you rethink what you thought you knew about screen!

Course Structure

Day One

  • Introduction with examples showing each stage of the process including; artwork for photo stencils made using cut or torn paper, different materials and flat objects used to make photograms, examples of photo stencils made using different materials and flat objects, examples of one, two and three colour screen prints on paper.
  • Health and safety information.
  • Demonstrations of how to coat screens with photo emulsion, setting up ready to screenprint.
  • Demonstration of how to screen print on to paper using a photo stencil including registering different layers of colour and printing both one colour and two colour designs. How to clean screens and squeegees.
  • Participants will choose a selection of different materials and objects to work with and then experiment with exposing different materials and objects onto the screens they coated and then wash out the exposed screens to create photo stencils.
  • Participants will set up to screen print and print their first layer of colour on paper. Once dry there may be time to add a second layer to the prints.
  • Clean up and reflection

Day Two

  • Participants will develop what they have learnt in day one and work on ideas for artwork and finished screen prints.
  • Participants may want to create artwork for screen printing by cutting or tearing shapes or motifs from paper. They can also incorporate hand drawn imagery on mark resist. They can continue to work with flat objects to create photograms. Or they can work with a combination of all three techniques.
  • Participants will each coat a screen with photo emulsion then expose their artwork or objects onto the screens then wash out the exposed screens to create photo stencils.
  • Participants will set up to screen print and print their first layer of colour on paper.
  • Clean up and reflection

Day Three

  • Participants will set up to screen print, register their second layer of colour and add it to their prints.
  • Once the prints are dry there will be time for participants to register a third layer to their screen prints
  • Clean up and reflection

More information about equipment and materials available if needed as well as a hand out with details of materials/equipment.

About the tutor

Karoline Rerrie is an illustrator and printmaker who has specialised in screen print for over ten years. She draws artwork by hand and then creates the layers for each colour using either photo stencils or simple hand cut stencils. She carefully screen prints her work in small, limited editions. Her work is characterised by bold outlines, bright colours and pattern. She also enjoys working with shapes and overlapping layers of flat colour to create her prints. She is inspired by screen printing and all the possibilities it offers. Alongside creating her own prints Karoline also works on commissions and regularly runs screen print workshops.
