Type High Lino Morning Taster

Join us for this fun taster session learning how to design and cut a small lino block and print it on one of our portable Adana presses. Linocuts are a type of relief print and give bold results. Try this popular technique, make a small unique edition of prints to take home and perhaps begin your linocut journey.

Course structure

• Introduction to the session and look at examples of linocuts and blocks. Discussion of how to plan your design.
• Design your lino block
• Learn how to transfer the design to your type high lino.
• Demonstration of how to safely cut your block
• Cut your block.
• Learn how to lock your block into the press frame or “chase” for printing.
• Demonstration of inking up the block and printing.
• Sharing a press, print a small run of prints on one of the portable Adana presses.

We will be working on type high lino blocks 7.5cm x 7.5 cm square. (lino mounted onto a wood base) Paper size approx 18cm x 18cm.

About the Tutor

Sally Stephens uses the intaglio processes of etching and drypoint in her practice and also some screen print. Her work frequently explores the human face and its enduring fascination. Crowds and collections of faces provide a way to think about how the individual relates to a group, and consider the connections between people. Work is also inspired by travel and encountered images, for example Greek and Roman sculpture and busy city streets.

Sally has completed an Advanced Diploma in Printmaking at Central St Martins School of Art and an M A in printmaking at Northampton University. Sally is part of the LPW tutor team and has also delivered several community projects.

Leicester Print Workshop

Leicester Print Workshop is the regional development centre for printmaking. Established by artists in 1986, we are a registered charity, supported by Arts Council England. Our RIBA award-winning building is situated in Leicester City Centre's Cultural Quarter and is home to a large, well equipped open access Printmaking Studio.

We have over 30 years’ experience of teaching people printmaking. Our programme offers the largest number and broadest range of printmaking courses in the region, with courses suitable for beginners as well as experienced printmakers, delivered by practicing artists and nationally renowned tutors. Participants learn in small and friendly groups in our purpose-designed studio.
